Modern day endurance in essence is a long-distance horse race where horse and rider are up against the clock and the competition. Distances range from 40KM to 160KM which are completed in phases or loops. Endurance events are not always speed tests but more strategic competitions in which changes unfold quickly by phase or loop. Horses, riders, and crew work together as a team to cover varying terrain, adverse weather conditions and strategic changes by other horse-rider combinations. Events such as the President's Cup in Dubai or the Tevis Cup in California leave spectators who are hardy enough to stick around in awe and wonderment of the winning horses who fly across the finish after 160KM looking like they haven’t been ridden for more than 5KM.
